         ART SHOW NEWS

(submitted by Charlotte White)

Epic:  As a possible new venue, this location, a local private airport, wants 12 paintings for their lobby.  After consideration of the membership, I asked Ann Sullivan, Patti Doolittle, John Doolittle and Iva Fendrick to work with me on the project.  It is expected to be completed in December.  The artists will be painting local landmarks with airplanes in a contemporary brushy style.  The BAA will earn 25% upon sales.

Prom Dress Project:  This venue is still under discussion.  BAA members may paint prom dress with or without figures; there will be an auction benefiting the Project.  The BAA will also   benefit.

No longer at Family Music Center:  The business wanted the space for musical instruments.

Art Supply Center:  Get your supplies at the ASC at the Gallery to get ready for the Fair or up-coming Aquarius Show in November.

NEW  -  NEW

We have two new Arts in Business locations.

The Mazda dealership, 3201 Cattle Drive in the Auto Mall.  Patti Doolittle is the first exhibiting artist there and Mazda is hosting a reception for her on Thursday, September 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  We would love to have lots of BAA members support this reception on the 3rd.

Mazda dealership coming up:  plan now to participate in the “Vehicles, Past and Present” art show in January and February.  We are inviting BAA members to paint or photograph cars, trucks and tractors for this exhibit.  Minimum size 16” x 20”.  This show will be juried based on display space available.  Details to come in future    newsletter.

Guild House Gallery.  We have another new Art in Business location at the Guild House.  The first show featuring Guild House and Kern County paintings will be hung on August 29th at 10 a.m.  As paintings are sold, new paintings will be hung.  The Plan is that the exhibits will change out   quarterly.  Only paintings will be accepted and the number of paintings hung will be based on the display space available.  Sorry no photography.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This newsletter is going to be for both November and December, so we want to tell you as much as     possible.

First we will be having a November meeting on the  14th at 9:00 a.m. until approximately 12 noon.  For our program, you will want to be sure to be there to watch Vikki Cruz demonstrating in oils.  Thanks to Karen King, our VP, for getting these wonderful people for         programs last year and this year. You won't want to miss any one of them.

In December, we will be having a BAA Anniversary Auction.  The day and time will be announced soon.  It will be in our Gallery; and there will be food and lots of "silent auction" items.  These will make great     Christmas gifts for someone or yourself.  As we get this under way, we can use your help in many ways.  Also, we need donated items to be auctioned - they can be   anything including but not exclusive to Art Items. See or call Stella Mullins, Karen King or Ann Sullivan for more information about helping and donating. We really need your help to make this a great success.  This will be our biggest and best fund raiser for the year   (2009-10) and it will really help your organization with expenses. As soon as we set a date, mark your        calendars; and plan to come and bring your friends.

We will not have a meeting in the month of         December, so the Auction will be our Anniversary       get-together.  This is our 65th year and we are growing strong.  Help us celebrate together at this Anniversary Auction.

The Gallery had another wonderful reception on Friday night, October 16th.  Thank you for coming—we had a very nice turn out.  The show is featuring all the Art Room winners of the Kern County Fair.  It is really a nice show.  If you did not make the reception, try to come by and see all these paintings.  I hope this will become a yearly show; it was very nicely done.  Thank you to Shirley Rowles and Joyce Ogborn for all of their work pulling this show together.

See you on the 14th at 9:00 a.m., BAA Gallery of Art at East Hills Mall for our November meeting.

Kathy Schilling, President

A SPECIAL THANKS

A special thanks goes to Shirley Rowles’   husband, Harry, who refinished a sofa table and added a shelf to create a bookcase for our BAA historical photo albums.  This lovely new bookcase and the albums are located near the counter in our Gallery.  Thank you Harry.

Included on that shelf now are eleven new binders containing photographs of our Plein Air group for the last six years taken by Betty Cook.  The binders were compiled and donated by Betty.  She did a wonderful job.  Thank you Betty.

PLEIN AIR TREK

The Plein Air Trek, BAA’s plein air group, celebrated their sixth anniversary in mid-June.  In 2003, a small group of watercolorists on hiatus from classes agreed to meet weekly to keep in practice. Before the first group of 3 to 5 had even gotten together, word had spread so that eleven artists met to paint on the grounds of the   Bakersfield Museum of Art.  The group was honored as the outstanding 2004 Fine Arts group with a “Beautiful Bakersfield” Award.

We try to vary the venues from  cityscapes to rural venues to provide a   balance of challenging subjects.  Any medium that can be done on location is   welcome including “sketching” for those who  prefer studio work.  We meet almost every Wednesday morning year round, depending on the weather.

For more information contact Norma Neil at  663-4640 or cell 204-4653.
